Summer Tree Care Tips

Tree Lightning Protection

Lightning storms can be dangerous and numerous throughout the year. In 2002, we installed five copper lightning protection systems in trees, and many more since then.

Trees stuck by lightning have the potential to be deadly to humans, animals and the tree itself. In our experience, the most serious case resulted the death of a person asleep in bed when lightning struck, split a tree in half, forcing limbs through the roof and into the bedroom.

As a homeowner, it’s worth asking:

  • When should you consider installing lightning protection?

The answers are several:
  • Definitely, before lightning strikes the tree.
  • If there is a tree taller and/or overhanging your roof.
  • If you have a tree that is within 25 feet of your house.
  • If you have historic, rare or specimen trees on your property.
  • If you have trees under which people may congregate during a storm, such as on a golf course or in a park, or trees under which animals might seek shelter during a storm.

This information is intended to inform and not alarm you. Ultimate responsibility for maintaining your trees, property and life rests with you. If you wish to address the vulnerability of a specific tree or trees, call and arrange for an appointment with your representative.

Tree Cabling

Tree Cabling safety

The numerous, mid-summer thunderstorms and heavy winds that can pass through the Delaware Valley remind us of the awesome power of Mother Nature. In any given year, a large amount of storm damage can occur to trees.

Proper pruning is the best way to prepare your trees to withstand heavy winds. Cabling trees has also been shown to reduce the possibility of losing large limbs. A property inspection with your Arborist should reveal those trees that are in need of cables and/or bracing.

Our Arborists are very familiar with cabling systems and just how important an arboricultural tool they are. All of the cables that we install are in accordance with the ANSI A300 Standard for Tree Support Systems.

If you have a question about any trees on your property in need of a cabling system, call your Arborist today.
